Best for Britain has just published a new report on public attitudes towards the UK’s trading partners including the EU and US.

It explores how the public views the importance and reliability of the UK’s key trading partners, as well as the level of trust they place in them. The findings compare public attitudes from November 2024 and September 2025, effectively tracking sentiment through the first year of Donald Trump’s second US presidency. Interestingly, in the first year of Donald Trump’s second presidency, the British public’s trust in the US collapsed with the US’s “net trust” score falling by 25 points, from -10 to -35. Over the same period, the EU has emerged as the clear leader in public perceptions of reliability with roughly half of respondents identifying the EU as the UK’s most important trading partner.

The growing confidence in the EU highlights a broader public appetite for regulatory stability and stronger, more predictable trade relationships. Monitoring these trends helps us anticipate potential policy directions and supports our case for pursuing greater regulatory alignment with the EU.
