In a recent video call with over 750 participants, including representatives from across the food sector, the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Steve Reed, outlined an ambitious vision for the future of the UK’s food system. Organised by Defra’s Agrifood Chain Directorate, the meeting marked the beginning of a collaborative process to develop a comprehensive food strategy that promises to address some of the most pressing challenges facing the industry today.

The strategy, as articulated by the Secretary of State, aims to deliver far-reaching improvements that will ensure the long-term success of the food system. It will focus on four key areas:

  1. Healthier and more accessible food: Tackling obesity and improving public health remain central to the government’s agenda. The strategy will build on existing efforts to ensure that nutritious, affordable food is accessible to everyone, giving children the best start in life and helping adults live longer, healthier lives.
  2. Food security and supply chain resilience: Recognising the growing threats posed by climate shocks and geopolitical shifts, Defra plans to fortify the UK’s food supply chain to ensure it remains robust and reliable, safeguarding the nation’s food security.
  3. Economic growth and innovation: As the UK’s largest manufacturing sector, the food and drink industry holds immense potential for driving economic growth. The strategy will promote investment, innovation, and productivity to enable the sector to thrive in a competitive global market.
  4. Sustainability and decarbonisation: With a focus on supporting the Farming Roadmap, Defra is committed to reducing the environmental impact of food production. This includes protecting biodiversity, fostering nature-positive farming practices, and delivering a credible plan to decarbonise the food and farming sectors.

A collaborative approach

One of the most encouraging aspects of the proposed strategy is Defra’s commitment to close collaboration with industry stakeholders. As emphasised in the meeting, the strategy’s development will not happen in isolation. Instead, Defra is adopting a “new way of working” with the sector, building on strong partnerships and leveraging collective expertise.

A coalition comprising food sector leaders, academics, charities, and other key thinkers will shape the strategy’s vision and framework. Additionally, a new sector delivery board will ensure that the approach is coordinated and impactful, with measurable outcomes.

Structured engagement and next steps

The strategy’s structured engagement process will begin in the new year, providing industry participants with a significant opportunity to contribute to its development. Importantly, Defra is not only seeking input but has also pledged to answer outstanding questions from stakeholders as this process unfolds. Defra’s Agrifood Chain Directorate said: “We are very keen to continue to engage with the sector as we develop the strategy”

This commitment to open dialogue signals a positive step towards ensuring that the strategy reflects the diverse needs and expertise of the sector and marks a departure from the frustrating lack of engagement under the previous government.

BMPA's role in holding government accountable

While the Secretary of State’s message offers an optimistic vision, it is crucial that the government delivers on its promises. As representatives of the meat processing sector, we welcome Defra’s collaborative approach and are ready to contribute to the strategy’s development. However, we will also follow up with Defra to ensure that these commitments translate into tangible action.

The coming months will be critical in shaping the UK’s food system for the future. By working closely with Defra and other stakeholders, we can help build a strategy that benefits not only our industry but also the nation as a whole.

Stay tuned for updates as we engage with Defra and contribute to this vital initiative. Together, we can ensure a sustainable, resilient, and prosperous future for the UK’s food sector.
