BMPA member Cranswick has published a new report setting out the scale of its contribution to the UK economy, food security and British agriculture. It underlines just how strategically important the meat processing sector is to the country.
The numbers in Where Great Food Comes Fromare are a powerful reminder that meat processing is not simply one link in the food supply chain. BMPA members like Cranswick support farming, manufacturing, employment, regional economies and, critically, the UK’s ability to feed itself. At a time when Britain still relies on imports for around 35% of the food it consumes, the strength and productive capacity of the domestic food industry matters enormously.
The report also reinforces a theme we highlighted recently: the need for a clear, long-term government strategy for food. Companies making major investments in processing capacity, technology, skills and British agriculture need the confidence to plan years ahead. Cranswick itself has invested more than £1 billion across the group over the past eight years, which is exactly the kind of long-term commitment that a resilient domestic food system depends upon.
Cranswick says the report is intended to contribute to the wider national discussion about the future of food. Its findings provide a useful illustration of why that discussion cannot be separated from questions of economic growth, investment and food security, and why government policy needs to give the businesses that produce and process Britain’s food the certainty to continue investing for the future.
