This week the initial results from the innovative Breed for CH4nge program were presented along with a new data tool which has been created to help sheep breeders increase ewe efficiency and lower methane emissions. It proves that the level of methane emissions in an animal is heritable, and the new index ranks animals on their breeding potential for a naturally low carbon footprint.
More research is needed but the findings show that it’s important to include methane breeding values alongside other performance measures to guard against unintended reductions in efficiency and profitability.
