After a long process to re-gain Britain’s Negligible Risk status for BSE, it would appear that we’re entering the ‘final furlong’. BMPA has received word from our European association contacts that the vote (i.e. the EC amending its legislation to recognise our Negligible Risk status to align it with the WOAH May 2025 decision) will “very likely” take place on 20 October 2025 when the Animal Health Plant, Animal, Food and Feed (PAFF) Committee is meeting.
According to our European contacts, it usually takes between five to seven weeks for the decision to be published in the Official Journal and, once published, it takes immediate effect and is addressed to the Member States and to the UK. So, assuming a positive vote at the PAFF Committee meeting on 20 October, which it’s believed will happen, the status should be formalised by the end of this year.
It’s been a long wait and has cost British processors a lot in lost revenue, but the end is now in sight. As soon as we have any update or official confirmation, we’ll let you know.
