The keenly anticipated Land Use Framework was published this week. We’ll be combing through the document in detail over the coming weeks but our interest has already been piqued by comments made during a BBC Farming Today interview with ex government analyst at Defra, Dustin Benton, now of Forefront Advisors who provide public affairs insights to companies.

One of the standout comments was this: “If you stack up the numbers it ought to be much more profitable – especially in the uplands – to farm mostly carbon and a little bit of livestock.”

Also published this week was a note on the Government’s commitment to the “30by30” target to “effectively conserve and manage 30% of England’s land and seas by 2030.” Over the coming weeks we’ll be considering the implications of both these initiatives, how they might interact with one another and how farming support and subsidies may, in the future, be influenced or driven by one or both. We’ll keep you appraised of our thinking in future updates.
