As we said in our press release yesterday, the UK’s meat industry is poised for a resurgence in EU trade, thanks to a landmark agreement that dramatically reduces post-Brexit bureaucracy.

The new Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) deal delivers exactly what the industry has been calling for: fewer forms, faster logistics, and less cost. While UK exporters will continue to align with EU standards to access this crucial market, the agreement makes that process seamless, with a fraction of the administrative burden and hundreds of millions in costs saved.

Critically, the deal appears to unlock scope for regulatory innovation at home. Thanks to flexible provisions, it looks like the UK can now explore gene editing advancements without risking EU market access, provided EU standards are respected at the border.

British meat processors will also benefit immediately from more efficient logistics, including the return of multi-drop deliveries and just-in-time supply chains that enhance product shelf life and competitiveness.

The EU remains our most valuable trading partner. This deal puts us back in the game.
