We’re pleased to hear of Mark Haighton’s appointment as AHDB’s new Sector Director for pork. He brings with him a deep knowledge of the pork industry and its unique challenges and should prove a staunch advocate for levy payers.
He joins at a time when some big issues are being debated that could have far-reaching implications for businesses. BMPA and its members are keen to work collaboratively with Mark as he takes on the debate surrounding Co2 vs Argon for stunning. The technical, practical and financial implications of switching are complex and, to date, have not been sufficiently well understood. Mark’s technical understanding and hands-on experience will help clarify the issues and assist in producing a thorough assessment for policy makers.
There’s also the knotty issue of planning processes and regulations for new pig and poultry units. The current system is actively preventing investment from companies in UK food infrastructure just at a time when we need to be improving our food security. Mark’s experience and understanding of the hurdles faced will help AHDB play a role in un-blocking the system.
