New ‘Super Ultra Processed” classification app launched

Flora Southey over at Food Navigator has a good write-up of the new WISEcode appthat aims to provide US consumers with a more nuanced understanding of processed foods, moving beyond the general “ultra-processed” category used by the NOVA system.

The system considers factors like the number of processed ingredients, added sugars, and ingredients with significant health concerns when assigning a score and has 14 different codes that highlight the most harmful ingredients – things like allergens, artificial preservatives and sweeteners, seed oils and ‘MAHA” (Make America Healthy Again initiative criteria).

WISEcode are looking to expand and are calling on food brands, scientists and consumers around the world to join the WISEalliance community to collaborate through early access to the WISEcode terminal and database analytics.
