Red Tractor hits the reset button

Technical & Regulatory
December 12, 2025

Red Tractor has launched a sweeping review of its farm standards. It’s the first full-scale rethink since the independent Farm Assurance Review called for a “fundamental reset” of compliance and auditing across UK agriculture. What’s on the table is not just a tidy-up of paperwork, but a re-imagining of how audits and assessments are carried out with promises to cut red tape, reduce farmer burden and simplify compliance procedures.

Proposed changes include re-assessing the frequency and format of audits (for example, moving to remote assessments using photos instead of always requiring on-farm visits), offering more flexible “modular” audit options, and pruning duplicated or overly granular compliance points.

Some may be wary of “light-touch audits” like using photos instead of on-site inspections, especially in light of past criticisms that assurance standards don’t always guarantee good environmental or welfare performance.  But, if done well, this review could deliver real gains for farmers and see a lighter audit burden, fewer duplicate checks, more flexibility and more relevant standards.

By giving farmers a stronger voice through sector boards and Technical Advisory Councils, Red Tractor may rebuild trust and improve transparency. Early signposting of priorities and an open consultative process gives producers a chance to shape the outcome, rather than having new rules imposed.

Ultimately, if this review succeeds, it could help Red Tractor reclaim its original purpose and offer credible assurance without burdening farmers. The aim will be to ensure the scheme remains fit for purpose in a changing, post-Brexit UK agriculture landscape.
