The White House is pressing the UK to allow chlorinated chicken and hormone-treated beef into British supermarkets, using stalled tech cooperation as leverage in wider trade talks.

The demands, linked to Donald Trump’s administration, reopen arguments the US failed to win in the original trade talks earlier this year. Food standards remain a red line for Keir Starmer, and so they should. Such a concession to the US would mean we’d be compromising our food trade with our biggest, closest and most lucrative market, the EU.

It’s worth reminding ourselves that, despite talk of Britain no longer being a ‘rule taker’ after Brexit, if we wish to continue exporting our goods into the giant market on our doorstep (which we do) then we must comply with their standards REGARDLESS of whether we’re in or out of the EU, just like any other third country.
