US meat exporters eye British pork and beef market

An interesting insight into the ambitions of US meat exporters came from comments made recently by the Vice President of Economic Analysis at the US Meat Exporters Federation recently. She explains that the UK is the only major importer of beef where the US has no market share, having lost duty-free access after Brexit when the beef quota stayed with Europe.

She also sees huge potential on the $2.8 billion pork import market into the UK, saying “We just need reciprocal access,” adding “we need no tariffs, no quotas. The UK benefits from practically unfettered access into the U.S., and we need the same into the UK.”

At the moment British pork producers are protected by an import tariff. But should that tariff be removed and US producers be willing to meet official UK food safety requirements as well as provide higher animal welfare demands from supermarkets, the impact could be substantial.
