BMPA has been invited to join the Government’s SPS Readiness Business Advisory Council. It’s an expert stakeholder group established by Defra to guide the practical implementation of the upcoming UK-EU Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) Agreement, which is slated to take effect in mid-2027.

The council will meet every other month and ensure that new trade rules and operational procedures for plants, animals, and food are grounded in real-world business experience.

Membership is capped at 13 trusted stakeholders from across the agri-food supply chain who will provide rapid feedback to ministers, test policy ideas in confidence, and identify risks and real-world impacts.

The Advisory Council plays a vital role in preventing bottlenecks and ensuring support, certification, and border procedures are manageable for businesses of all sizes.

By Summer 2026 the government is expected to announce further details on upcoming changes, including transition periods and any exceptions and by Autumn 2026, we expect detailed guidance, checklists, and practical support tools to be published.

We’ll keep members informed at every stage as the agreement develops.
