The BMPA has raised our concern with the UK government that the EU’s forthcoming ban on Brazilian beef which will come into force in early September, could severely impact the UK beef market and consumer confidence in beef.
In its latest “Getting it Right at the Border” newsletter, the Animal and Plant Health Authority (APAH) had this to say: “GB will not introduce new import restrictions on 3 September 2026 as a result of the EU’s decision regarding Brazil’s listing. Imports from Brazil, may continue while GB completes its technical assessment. We expect the technical assessment to take around six months to complete. Existing import arrangements will remain in place while the assessment is carried out. We will continue to engage with trading partners, industry and other stakeholders.” We’d recommend anyone involved in the import and export of products of animal origin to sign up to this emailer via their portal.
We have urged Defra to conduct and publish an urgent assessment on the safety of Brazilian beef and of the potential impact on the UK beef market if Brazilian beef is banned by the EU but continues to enter the UK, potentially in larger quantities if their access to the EU market is constrained.
