The debate over Brazilian beef and poultry imports has intensified this week as the UK Government comes under increasing pressure to decide whether it will follow the European Union’s approach to restricting imports.

The National Farmers’ Union (NFU) is urging ministers to introduce a precautionary ban on Brazilian beef and poultry imports if Brazil cannot demonstrate that it meets equivalent standards on the use of antibiotics. In announcing its position, NFU President Tom Bradshaw said: “Unless there is full confidence that Brazilian meat has been produced responsibly, the government should take the same precautionary approach as the EU and ban the import of Brazilian products.”

The NFU argues that, if the UK does not mirror any EU restrictions, there is a risk that Brazilian meat originally destined for the European market could instead be diverted to the UK, placing additional pressure on domestic producers.

However, Brazilian meat industry representatives have strongly rejected those claims. According to The Grocer, they argue there is “no economic rationale” for redirecting significant volumes of beef or poultry to the UK and dismiss suggestions that the UK market could be flooded with displaced exports. They also maintain that Brazil continues to engage with the European Commission in an effort to resolve the regulatory issues.

A separate opinion piece in The Grocer suggests the issue may not be as straightforward as the political debate implies. While acknowledging the NFU has chosen a highly topical issue, it questions whether the UK would have sufficient legal and scientific grounds to introduce its own import ban and notes that any such decision would need to be capable of withstanding scrutiny under the UK’s international trade obligations.

At the time of writing, the UK Government has not indicated whether it intends to follow the EU’s lead. The issue therefore remains one to watch closely over the coming weeks as both the regulatory position and the UK’s response continue to develop.
