BSE detection highlights effectiveness of surveillance controls

A case of classical BSE has been confirmed in a cow in Dumfries and Galloway. While any BSE case attracts attention, importantly this isolated case was picked up through Scotland’s routine surveillance system, demonstrating that the controls designed to detect and contain the disease are working effectively. The animal did not enter the human food chain and Food Standards Scotland has confirmed there is no risk to human health.
