BMPA is calling on Government to take precautionary action over Brazilian beef ahead of an EU import prohibition coming into force on 3 September. With concerns that meat previously destined for the EU could be diverted into the UK market, particularly through food service, we are urging Defra to accelerate its safety assessment and, in the meantime, suspend imports pending an official veterinary inspection of Brazil. Chief Executive John Powell warns that failure to act risks both consumer confidence and the reputation of British beef.
