There are two important regulatory developments for meat exporters to be aware of this week. We have an update from the FSA and Defra on changes to health and identification marks expected under the UK–EU SPS Agreement. While the final format is still being negotiated and there is no action for businesses to take yet, processors should bear the forthcoming change in mind when ordering new packaging, labels and other materials carrying their ID mark.
More immediately, French SIVEP is introducing additional requirements for consignments using wooden packaging, including pallets. Some French ports, including Dunkirk and Caen, have already begun requesting CHED-PP declarations alongside the existing CHED-P, with exporters potentially needing to provide detailed information on pallet numbers, origin and ISPM15 markings.
Members can download new guidance from FSA and Defra, together with a very useful presentation from Unsworth explaining the French SIVEP changes, which shipments are affected and the practical steps exporters should take. In particular, Unsworth recommends checking pallet compliance and markings before loading, recording the necessary information in advance and engaging with customs brokers early. Failure to have the information available could result in border delays, additional documentation requests or, potentially, consignments being refused.
