FSA highlights lessons from abattoir welfare audits

Following a series of animal welfare themed audits carried out at abattoirs in England and Wales earlier this year, the FSA has written to industry with some useful conclusions and recommendations.

The audits found that FBO systems were largely being implemented in line with legislative requirements, but the FSA has also identified several areas where operators should review their arrangements. These include CCTV maintenance and resilience, maintenance and calibration of stunning equipment, supervision of Temporary Certificate of Competence holders and staff training in animal handling.

We’ve included a copy of the FSA’s letter in the BMPA Portal and invite members to review the recommendations and check that their own procedures and records adequately address these areas.
