Automation and artificial intelligence are opening up new opportunities for meat processors, but technology alone cannot solve the industry’s biggest challenges. That’s the theme of a feature in the September/October edition of FoodBev magazine, which includes contributions from BMPA CEO John Powell.
Titled Making the cut, the article explores how processors are using automation, robotics and AI to improve efficiency, maximise yields, reduce waste and strengthen food safety. It also examines the challenges of scaling up cultivated meat production.
John brings a UK meat industry perspective to the discussion, highlighting persistent labour shortages, declining livestock numbers, post-Brexit trade barriers and the growing burden of duplicated compliance audits. He makes the point that, while processors are keen to embrace new technology, investment depends on long-term confidence saying “Processors still want to invest, but major automation and technology projects need a stable economic, regulatory and political environment. Uncertainty makes long-term commitments harder.”
John also highlights the practical limitations of technology, particularly in complex operations such as deboning, where automation remains difficult and expensive.
The underlying message is that innovation has an important role to play, but the industry also needs the right conditions to invest. Addressing structural challenges and reducing unnecessary regulatory duplication will be just as important as advances in robotics and AI.
