New research into the operation of anaerobic digesters suggests that adding a very small amount of biochar to abattoir wastewater could help the digestion process work faster and increase methane output by around 30%. It’s still early-stage research rather than a proven commercial solution, but it could point to a simple, low-cost way of getting more energy from existing waste streams while improving environmental performance.
