This week saw the publication of an expert review into the Government’s plans to eradicate Bovine TB by 2038 which , it concluded, are “very challenging but achievable” and will require more funding and a drive for urgency.
The most practical solution would appear to be a vaccine for cattle, but this comes with complications that will take time to iron out and must take into account the implications for international trade. There will need to be a process of testing to ensure efficacy and food safety, but it must also be proved that vaccinated animals can be differentiated from infected animals.
It’s already on the World Organisation for Animal Health’s radar but it will take time for WOAH to agree to its use. To progress this from here, it makes sense to start from an understanding of the international system and trade implications. Considerations such as withdrawal periods and the practicalities of vets needing to sign Export Health Certificates will quickly come to the fore and need addressing early.
