“Defra should conduct a more realistic assessment of food as a Critical National Infrastructure.” That’s one of the conclusions of a new report from the National Preparedness Commission that says the UK needs to take its food security much more seriously, as well as think differently about how we achieve it.
Much of the report tackles how to improve civil food resilience at the community level – advocating a change in mindset amongst people, companies and government to match current geopolitical and climate threats.
The report also advises a “re-localisation” of food production as well as “a policy reset to rebalance the food economy from just-in-time to just-in-case.” It’s an interesting take on the food security debate from authors Tim Lang, Natalie Neumann and Anthony So.
