News that the Government has agreed to continue supporting Bioethanol producer Ensus until the end of October has secured domestic supplies of Co2 for another three months. Responding to the news BMPA’s CEO John Powell said: “There is no immediate concern about supplies. To our mind the government is quite correctly examining the challenges that may occur if the conflict in Iran continues over an extended period. Carbon dioxide is an essential input for the meat processing sector, particularly for the humane stunning of animals and for some packaging applications. This supports the maintenance of our self-sufficiency and food security, while also avoiding the impact of significant animal welfare challenges. “
John added: “We ask that Government keep the situation in the middle east under review and if potential or actual shortages of CO2 appear likely, that they respond by continuing to keep Ensus operating.”
