Defra’s Livestock Information Transformation Programme recently entered a new phase, with development brought in-house to accelerate the digitisation of UK livestock traceability and align with broader EU trade priorities. A synchronized multi-species rollout is scheduled for mid-2027, launching digital cattle tracking alongside mandatory low-frequency electronic identification tags for calves. While paper passports will continue to be used, meat processors should look to audit their systems for hardware compatibility and prepare for integration with the new digital architecture to ensure seamless operations.
BMPA has previously urged the UK Government and devolved administrations to ensure that any modernisation of traceability systems maintains full compatibility across Great Britain.
