Health & Safety Guidance Notes for the Meat Industry

Technical & Regulatory
April 4, 2025

In a typical year, the meat industry reports over 200 major injuries and 1,000+ other reportable injuries to employees. With the help available in these guidance notes, the task of getting to grips with health and saftey is made easier and will also enable companies to reduce costs.

The BMPA Health and Safety Committee brings together representatives of industry, trade associations, trade unions and others to identify the health and safety issues the meat industry faces and prepare guidance on what can be done to mitigate them. Guidance notes have been produced for over 20 years and contain a large amount of useful and practical material.

These guidance notes cover both detailed specific information on some of the basic safety and health issues in the industry and more general advice to employers on the steps they need to take to meet their obligations under the goal-setting legislation. It is designed to complement HSE guidance and to support the Recipe for Safety approach promoted by HSE over recent years.
