BMPA Chief Executive John Powell met with Stephen Morgan MP, Minister of State for Food Security and Rural Affairs, this week to press the industry’s case on a range of issues affecting UK meat processors.

The meeting provided an opportunity to raise members’ concerns over ongoing labour shortages, Defra’s consultation on CO₂ stunning, declining UK livestock numbers and the need for greater recognition of the vital role meat processors play in the UK’s food supply chain.

John also pressed for stronger industry representation in government decision-making, including a seat for processors on the Farming and Food Partnership Board. He proposed the establishment of a joint government-industry task and finish group to examine the long-term decline in UK livestock numbers and identify potential solutions.

The discussions were very constructive, with agreement to continue engagement on several of the issues raised, including further discussions with Defra officials and future ministerial visits to meat processing plants. These visits will be a great opportunity for policy makers to see first-hand the scale of operations and the pivotal role meat processors play in the UK’s food supply chain.

With John at the helm, BMPA will continue to make the case for its members at the highest levels of government, ensuring that the practical challenges facing meat processors are understood and reflected in future policy decisions.
