From 13 August 2025, the Fair Dealing Obligations (Pigs) Regulations 2025 will become law, requiring all new pig‑purchase contracts to be in writing, signed, and include clearly defined terms on pricing, duration, termination and dispute resolution.

While some exemptions apply, the rules will affect processors and abattoirs entering into agreements with producers, aligning with similar frameworks already in place in the dairy sector. By 13 August 2026, all existing and new contracts, regardless of when signed, must meet these standards. Under the new law producers may lodge complaints for non‑compliance, potentially resulting in fines (up to 1 % of purchaser turnover) or compensation awards.

As the newly appointed Agricultural Supply Chain Adjudicator, Richard Thompson will oversee enforcement and support throughout the transition. Pig processors are being encouraged to proactively review and update contracting templates to ensure compliance and Defra will be engaging with stakeholders through events, meetings, and guidance materials to help businesses prepare.
