BMPA has responded to the government’s consultation on improving school food standards in England, focusing on the proposed shift in how protein is delivered in school meals.
At the heart of the proposals is a move away from any clear expectation on serving meat regularly, alongside a stronger push towards plant-based proteins and a broader definition of a healthy diet.
BMPA supports the aim of improving dietary balance and widening protein choices. However, it raises a key concern that pulses and plant-based options are being framed as replacements for meat rather than additions. That distinction matters, particularly when it comes to maintaining nutritional quality.
Meat remains a reliable source of essential nutrients such as iron, zinc and vitamin B12, which are not always easy to replace consistently in school settings. Without clear safeguards, there is a risk that reducing meat provision could lead to unintended nutritional gaps, especially in schools with limited resources.
Cost is another major factor. With budgets already under pressure, there is a real risk that flexibility in the standards could lead to decisions driven more by price than nutrition. This could disproportionately affect children who rely on school meals as a key source of nutrient-dense food.
BMPA is calling for a more balanced approach that retains a clear baseline for meat provision, positions plant-based proteins as complementary, and ensures robust monitoring focused on nutritional outcomes rather than simple compliance.
Our response also highlights the need for practical support, funding and clear guidance to help schools deliver healthier meals without compromising on quality.
