The US Trade Representative has asked the US International Trade Commission (USITC) to open a global safeguard investigation into imports of fresh, chilled and frozen lamb meat following a petition from the American Sheep Industry Association. The US sheep industry claims rising imports have caused serious injury to domestic producers, and the investigation will assess whether increased imports are a substantial cause of that injury. If the USITC finds in favour of the petition, the US could introduce safeguard measures such as tariffs or import quotas.
The investigation is at a very early stage. The USITC is expected to gather evidence from interested parties before reaching an initial determination within 120 days. Defra is assessing the potential implications for UK exporters and is working across government to understand any impacts. Officials have said they will engage with industry as the investigation progresses. You can read more about this in the American Sheep Association’s latest press release.
