The British Meat Processors Association (BMPA) has welcomed the conclusion of negotiations on the new UK-Switzerland Free Trade Agreement, describing it as a positive step that will make trading with one of the UK’s important export markets simpler, quicker and more competitive for British meat businesses.
While the existing UK-Switzerland agreement already provides tariff-free trade for most goods, the new FTA goes further by making trade easier and more efficient, while delivering targeted improvements for UK exporters. These include better market access for beef, tariff-free access for lamb within Switzerland’s WTO quota, simplified rules of origin, and faster customs procedures designed to reduce delays for perishable goods. Together, these measures will help reduce friction at the border, improve certainty for exporters and strengthen the competitiveness of UK meat products in the Swiss market.
BMPA has worked closely with Defra throughout the negotiations, providing technical expertise and practical industry insight to help ensure the agreement reflects the needs of UK meat processors and exporters.
John Powell, Chief Executive of the BMPA, said:
“This is a welcome agreement that should make it easier for UK meat businesses to trade with Switzerland. Anything that reduces unnecessary bureaucracy, speeds up the movement of goods and improves market access is good news for exporters. We’re pleased that Defra worked closely with industry throughout the negotiations and recognised the value of practical input from businesses. It’s encouraging to see that collaborative approach reflected in an agreement that delivers real benefits for our sector.”
While the agreement will still need to be signed and implemented before businesses can begin using its provisions, BMPA believes it represents a welcome step towards smoother trade and improved opportunities for the UK’s world-class meat processing sector.
