Defra’s latest Agri-Food Attaché newsletter highlights a busy period for UK trade, with new agreements opening fresh opportunities for meat exporters and a renewed focus on working closely with industry to tackle export barriers.

Of particular interest to the meat and livestock sector are the new UK trade agreements with Switzerland, India and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), alongside Mexico’s ratification of the UK’s accession to CPTPP. Together these developments create new opportunities for exports including red meat, lamb and pork, while Defra’s attaché network continues to provide on-the-ground support to help businesses navigate overseas markets.

It also reports that 20 market access barriers worth more than £80 million a year have been resolved so far in 2026, with more than 200 others currently being progressed. Defra says its attachés can also provide market intelligence, help businesses connect with overseas customers and distributors, and assist when consignments are delayed at ports.

Importantly, Defra is keen to strengthen its partnership with industry, encouraging businesses to continue sharing their experiences and priorities. As the newsletter says: “Please continue to share your feedback and ideas throughout the year. By working in this way, we can deliver best outcomes for industry and UK exporters.”

There’s also a range of practical export tools and resources, including guidance, training, trade barrier reporting and direct access to the attaché network for product-specific advice.
